Lorenzo is the Altiplano’s version of a techie- at 70 years + He is the alchemist of the cooperative, trying out all the varieties of quinoa seed he can get his hands on. Sowing them in small experimental areas he currently has 76 varieties on the go, planted on slopes, flat land, southward facing etc. From the results he has so far he reckons on re-planting the best 24 varieties again next year, judged on their resistance to the poor rainfall this year and the size of the quinoa seed buds they produce. He has planted a large field of yellow looking quinoa which actually produces white quinoa- this they plan to roll out across the coop as the birds shy away from eating the seeds and it has proven very resistant to poor rainfall. Hats off (so long as you have plenty of sun cream on to protect against high altitude UV) to Lorenzo.
